Montana was cold and dreary. It snowed most of the time we were there, but it was kinda fun learnin’ new stuff. Most of it I already knew, but there were two therapists there workin’ with us, showin’ us cues to look for to know when a client was reactin’ poorly to their therapy session. Some people couldn’t talk or wouldn’t, so we’d need to be able to read physical clues to know when to intervene or not to. And we learned about some equipment we could use to make mountin’ and dismountin’ easier for clients with physical disabilities, and I was excited to get my hands on all of it. I figured Bigsy would let us use him as a guinea pig when we got the equipment for Cade Ranch.

There were a lotta kids runnin’ around, and I played with ’em, carryin’ ’em on my shoulders while they giggled and squealed. The barn hosted a campout one night for a group of kids, ages eight to twelve, though they didn’t actually sleep there. Dean was all into it, too, probably imaginin’ his daughters at that age. Jack started a fire that evenin’, we roasted marshmallows, and the kiddos soaked up our attention like itty-bitty sponges.

“Are you a real cowboy?” Zoe asked, tuggin’ on the ends of my hair. “I didn’t know cowboys had long hair.”

“He’s a hippie cowboy,” Dean said, chucklin’.

Zoe skipped over to Dean and crawled into his lap, lookin’ up at him, and the smile on his face? Oh boy. Guy was a goner. “What’s a hippie?” she asked. She was very affectionate, and Miss Pearl, the camp counselor, told us it was a characteristic of down syndrome. If she wasn’t holdin’ my hand or Dean’s, she was huggin’ Jack.

I laughed, watchin’ him smile at Zoe. The difference between Jack now and Jack a year ago was night and day. When it was time to work or to ride, he always picked Zoe to be his partner. I took pics with my phone of the two of ’em together, dancin’ around the arena or out ridin’, and sent ’em to Evvie. She texted back that she was gonna make Jack knock her up the second he got home. Gross, but yeah, I could picture it.

“A hippie’s just someone with long hair and stinky clothes who listens to weird music. So, basically, Finn,” Dean said, and Zoe howled with laughter.

“My grandma said she was a hippie,” Justin said. That kid was smart as a whip. He also had cerebral palsy, and he had the best sense of humor and was always crackin’ us up. “She said when it was the nineties, she choked the peace pipe.”

Snortin’ hot chocolate out my nose, I tried not to laugh but failed, and Justin giggled, pointin’ at the mess on my jacket.

“We really are cowboys,” I said, “but we don’t work with cows, only horses.”

“Doesn’t that mean you’re horseboys?”

“Hm, s’pose you’re right, Justin,” I said, “but horseboy don’t sound quite as cute
